Already Gone

My mama mapped out the road that she knows
Which hands you shake and which hands you hold
In my hand-me-down Mercury, ready to roll
She knew that I had to go

The pakpak paused, leaning forwards and bracing her hands on her knees. Her breaths were shallow and somewhat pained, and the cat who had become her temporary companion turned back towards her with a look of concern.
"For a wanderer, you really haven't got much stamina," he remarked. "You sure you're alright?"
Mama laughed hoarsely, "It's fine, sugar. I just… just need a minute."
Pilot shook his head, sitting down in the dust of the road to let Mama get her wind back. "If you're asthmatic, why don't you have an inhaler?"
"Used to be that I did," she replied with a shrug. "But medicine takes money, and I don't exactly have a steady job. I'm more of a stay-at-home mom sort, if you catch my drift."
Pilot quirked an eyebrow, "You seem to have a pretty loose definition of 'home.'"
"Oh, well when you have as many kids as I do and they all get spread out, you have to make sacrifices."
"Right," Pilot said. "Well it seems that you've got your breath back, so we should get a move on. I real and I really liked it, so I decided to base the piece on it~ Doing a background in this style was kind of fun. Congratulations on second, and I hope you like it!
I wanted it to be the full file size for download, but any of dA's bigger display sizes make it a bit blurry So Shinko, let me know if you want the bigger size (3149x2699px) and I'll upload it to stash.
